Tennessee Oil Spill; Environmental Disaster
MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- A 60-foot barge has become submerged in Tellico Lake
and environmental officials are trying to contain fuel leaking from it.The Daily Times of Maryville reported the barge is owned by Marine Designs of Lenoir City and is used to install residential boat ramps. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has put two 400-foot booms around the partly sunken barge to contain fuel that had leaked. The agency and the barge owner were formulating a plan to pump up to 125 gallons of fuel believed to be still in the barge's tank. The barge, which has its own engine, was found to be sinking Sunday afternoon at Lotterdale Cove in Loudon County.
