One-Night Hiwassee River B&B Getaway

LivingSocial
Making History on the Hiwassee River

Making History on the Hiwassee River

Pinhook Plantation House • Calhoun, TN

Here's some romantic history: The Pinhook Plantation House was built in 1810 on a large swath of lush land overlooking the Hiwassee River bend, verdant pastures, and the Cherokee Mountains. All the town came together to dance and romance at balls here—leading two gentlemen into a duel over a young lady.

Now, 200 years later, it's time to add your story to Pinhook's history with an overnight ($80) stay in one of this inn's antique luxury suites. Enjoy views of red sunsets across the pond from the comfort of your room, appointed with feather beds, cozy quilts, and four-poster beds. Some still feature the plantation's original brick hearths, newly renovated to be functional with gas logs.

Innkeeper Ellen is known for her friendliness—and her culinary skills. Enjoy a three-course candlelight breakfast featuring anything from stuffed French toast, upside-down eggs, and fresh fruit to your heart's content...

Bill to Sell Wine in Grocery Stores Hit's a Partisan Snag

The bill by Republican Sen. Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro hit a snag Tuesday in the Senate State and Local Government Committee, and will be delayed for two weeks. The companion bill is pending in the House.

This is the fourth year lawmakers have tried to pass the bill. Currently, grocery stores can't sell wine and liquor stores can't sell beer.

Ketron said opening up supermarket sales will create millions of dollars in revenue for the state as well as much needed jobs.

"It has a very positive fiscal impact," he said.

Jarron Springer, president of the Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association, said a report from the Legislature's Fiscal Review Committee shows the sale of wine in supermarkets will general about $20 million for both state and local governments.

"It's time to make this move in Tennessee," Springer said. "This is good for the public."

Opponents, however, worry about the impact on existing liquor store owners or expanding the availability of alcohol.

Richard Fisher, executive director of the Tennessee Drug Awareness Council, told the committee that passing the legislation will have negative consequences for young people.

"That greater availability will lead to more drinking by our teenagers and youth here in Tennessee," he said.

Sen. Mike Faulk, a Kingsport Republican and member of the committee, cited statistics showing there more alcohol-related arrests stem from drinking beer than wine.

But Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork, who also testified before the panel, said he considers all types of alcohol to be a problem when it comes to underage drinking.

He said his biggest problem is convenience store clerks who fail to check for identification. Just last week, he said, there were seven convenience stores in his area that sold to underage individuals, which he believes is an indicator of what authorities will have to contend with across the state.

"My narcotics division is having to spend time just monitoring convenience stores," Woolfork said. "So I see this as an undue burden on law enforcement."

When asked if delaying the measure is an indication it may once again be nearing a demise, Springer said he didn't believe that to be the case.

Puppy Mill Busted: Puppies in Peril and Need Your Help

The Tennessee State Fairgrounds was turned into a temporary shelter for scores of dogs that were seized from a home in Warren County.

According to the rescue group, Animal Rescue Corps of Washington, D.C., the dogs were seized Tuesday by the Warren County Sheriff’s Department from a home on Mears Road.

ARC said one dog was found in a cage with two dead dogs. The group said that dogs were being kept in wire hutches outside and in wooden crates in the basement.

In a news release, ARC said about 125 dogs were seized. Five birds were also found in the home, as well as seven dead dogs. The group said it began its investigation after receiving a tip about the condition of the dogs.

Wilma Jones, 80, lived at the home where the dogs were taken. ARC contacted the district attorney’s office, which is investigating possible animal cruelty charges.

Jones said she doesn't have kids and has never married, so these dogs were her babies. She said she loves them and feels dead inside now that they've been taken away.

Jones said this wasn't a puppy mill; that authorities have it all wrong. She has been doing this for 50 years and has spent a lot of time and money caring for so many pets. She did sell some of them, she said, but for the most part a large number of them were her pets.

Jones was not arrested, but she does have a court appearance April 5.

The public can help the dogs by donating items or their time. Email info@animalrescuecorps.org to help.

Skateboarder's Tazed for Trespassing

Two skateboarders got the shock of their life. They were allegedly tased by a man who was upset with them trespassing. The incident was reported to police on Wednesday at a warehouse on Middle Tennessee Blvd. The police report says the suspect asked the two skateboarders, “what gives you the right to trespass?” before tasing one on the wrist and reportedly reaching into a truck window to tase the second. The skater who jumped into his truck to flee the area says he ran into a concrete pillar while trying to drive and avoid being tased at the same time.

52-Year old Nolan Keith Abernathy was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of aggravated assault for purportedly using the taser on the two skaters. Abernathy was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment. The self employed contractor is scheduled to appear before a judge on May 3rd to explain why the taser was reportedly used on trespassers.

Man Scammed of $500k

Winning $500-thousand dollars is usually too good to be true. That is definitely the case for one 79-year old Murfreesboro man who fell victim to such a scam. The elderly resident told police that he sent $4,000 on two occasions to a female via Western Union. He told officers the female had called him stating that he won $500 grand and he needed to pay for “insurance” on the money before he could receive it.

At this point, the $8-thousand that was sent to the woman in the Philippines has yet to be recovered.
