MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Rutherford County landfill officials propose spending $150,000 in the coming year to address the leaking of a solid-waste liquid containing chemicals into the Stones River.
State inspectors noticed leachate in a drainage ditch from the county's construction and demolition landfill on March 5 and again on a reinspection March 12.
The county has an engineering consulting firm that visits the landfill quarterly to test the groundwater for chemicals as well as methane gas.
This is the same landfill where low level radioactive material had been dumped for over a decade without public knowledge. It also is at the headwaters of a three county water supply;Rutherford,Davidson,Cheatham.
